Firstly, what exactly is a body wave, and how is it done? Will it damage my hair too much? I have curly hair, that is frizzy and messy, and while I like that it comes from my mother (ha ha) I hate how it looks on me. I read in a magazine that girls with extrememly curly hair should get a body wave if they want to tone it down and have nicer, softer curls, or something along those lines.
If I get one, will it tone down my frizziness and make my curls softer, and more simple? I don't know alot about perms except that I don't want one, and I'm wondering if a Body Wave is the next best thing. Thanks.
Should I get a Body wave for my curly hair?
I have the same exact hair as you. I checked with my stylist on this and she said no, the body wave is in effect a perm set on big rollers. She was concerned it would dry out my hair and make it frizzier. I tend to agree with her.
She recommended a book called Curly Girl which you can buy on Amazon. The key to losing the frizz and getting nice soft curl is more moisture. It recommends washing your hair with conditioner not shampoo (yes really!). I have been doing this (washing with conditioner) for several months, using shampoo only about every week or two and my hair looks great. I then add gel and leave-in conditioner and either air dry or blow dry gently part way. I do use a curling iron to frame the curls around my face. You should never use a brush (it will make you frizz) and only comb it with a wide-toothed comb when its wringing wet. Make sure your stylist knows how to cut curly hair - it requires a different technique than straight hair. Unfortunately most stylists cut curly hair as if it were straight.
Anyway, my hair has never looked better and I recommend this book.

I never had a perm before, so I don't know what that is like. But I did had my hair done so cute. I had it curled at the beauty salon, braided hair before. And barrettes in my hair, that looked so cute.
